<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aWXU7tG-miw/XtGXeqB9diI/AAAAAAAAHqY/4F8QVsze7O87Phcf7jo5X3nocftCfE4FACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG-8862.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aWXU7tG-miw/XtGXeqB9diI/AAAAAAAAHqY/4F8QVsze7O87Phcf7jo5X3nocftCfE4FACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-8862.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I then used a model wheel from a cannon to create vehicle lines down the middle, built it up with some roads and gravel, painted it and glued on some grass tufts and flock. A coat of spray to seal it all and its good to go.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NlnPwjQQtA4/XtGXgpWwYPI/AAAAAAAAHqc/ZOuAMfIj5gAZi6v0dnhhfrUxb9qG_zc4wCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG-8863.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NlnPwjQQtA4/XtGXgpWwYPI/AAAAAAAAHqc/ZOuAMfIj5gAZi6v0dnhhfrUxb9qG_zc4wCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-8863.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The color looks okay to blend in with the new mat and being caulk on canvas it does contour to the mat pretty well, especially when I build some side terrain pieces such as fields and walls and such to side on or next to the edges. The pic really shows the difference in the colors but in reality its not that different.<br />
<br />
The plan now is to make multiple pieces 12" long and some curve pieces and run a road from one side of the mat to the other. That will form the basic of a build project where I will then build all sorts of pieces to line the road, gradually building up what I would be aiming to game with.<br />
<br />
Stay tuned!<br />

Use a section of hard product for the based. I used 3mm mdf for this example but thick tough card might also do the trick depending on how badly it may warp when done. Previously I have used 5mm cork tiles and even 2 cork tiles glued together to combat warping. I have found that if you paint or glue and flock sections of the piece at a time it is less likely to warp than if I was to paint or glue the whole in 1 step.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-__QMio1Ulew/XsN1pHxoYmI/AAAAAAAAHhY/2aJ_c7hvDVUdYoh-2K4A7DxUoY-3oIArwCK4BGAsYHg/IMG-8833.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-__QMio1Ulew/XsN1pHxoYmI/AAAAAAAAHhY/2aJ_c7hvDVUdYoh-2K4A7DxUoY-3oIArwCK4BGAsYHg/s320/IMG-8833.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>2. Use a sharp knife to chamfer the edges so when they are placed on a terrain tabletop, which for me is a mat, the edges will blend in better.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7JKtYoy4mUg/XsN1weBzqrI/AAAAAAAAHhk/9_qubG1bvJMDmSGXVrfhGgt_WFqhDUvUACK4BGAsYHg/IMG-8834.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7JKtYoy4mUg/XsN1weBzqrI/AAAAAAAAHhk/9_qubG1bvJMDmSGXVrfhGgt_WFqhDUvUACK4BGAsYHg/s320/IMG-8834.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>3. Glue on the main scenic item for the model. In my case here I am building a rocky outcrop so I added some filler using old left over pieces of foamcore and a couple of pieces of bark from my garden. Other models might include small buildings, stockpile or scatter pieces, woods, fields, gardens or any combination of those. Don't worry about all the rocks in the images below as I got ahead of myself.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-88cCICC-ipo/XsN11jQUxDI/AAAAAAAAHhw/KVQT5vJp7Qw_uVWKfsSJGQ13eYZLz-nnQCK4BGAsYHg/IMG-8835.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-88cCICC-ipo/XsN11jQUxDI/AAAAAAAAHhw/KVQT5vJp7Qw_uVWKfsSJGQ13eYZLz-nnQCK4BGAsYHg/s320/IMG-8835.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-B_UYIXVEn5Q/XsN2EllED5I/AAAAAAAAHiA/4OCBjQLH6xsHnnvPlHV97fKQH_ThmUOwACK4BGAsYHg/IMG-8836.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-B_UYIXVEn5Q/XsN2EllED5I/AAAAAAAAHiA/4OCBjQLH6xsHnnvPlHV97fKQH_ThmUOwACK4BGAsYHg/s320/IMG-8836.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>4. Use plaster or filler of some sort to even out and build up the terrain so it looks like its naturally been that way for a while. I use a tube of SIKA WIDE CRACK FILLER - FILLER-105 from the local hardware store as it is a thick grey plaster/clay type substance with some texture already in it which works well as rough ground or wall render etc to give models a little more detail. I use my fingers to smooth it out and work it into the edges of scenic items but thin it out towards the edge of the base. If you are modelling a road or walking track into the scene you need to finish off my running a finger or two along the length of the track you are modelling a few times so it results in a slightly lower and worn out part of the model. With a water based filler you can dip your finger into water and rub it into the filler to make it more thin and spreadable where needed.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aDYxh4f60Mo/XsN2PYdje7I/AAAAAAAAHiQ/WeByhRQU8wEMp9nKBN-BeCQ-VwEUh2T1gCK4BGAsYHg/IMG-8837.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aDYxh4f60Mo/XsN2PYdje7I/AAAAAAAAHiQ/WeByhRQU8wEMp9nKBN-BeCQ-VwEUh2T1gCK4BGAsYHg/s320/IMG-8837.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-in3Dg1Vjo3c/XsOq-egtgrI/AAAAAAAAHjs/k67uFldS6PIio6SIEwO5vxDTdJvbCR7jgCK4BGAsYHg/IMG-8839.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-in3Dg1Vjo3c/XsOq-egtgrI/AAAAAAAAHjs/k67uFldS6PIio6SIEwO5vxDTdJvbCR7jgCK4BGAsYHg/s320/IMG-8839.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>5. While the filler is still wet or after applying a layer of wood glue to parts of the scene, sprinkle various sized rocks and gravel or sand of the model. Remember to avoid tracks or roads as the traffic on those tend to be clear of such items.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QvI3BzWIQ3E/XsSytxU47RI/AAAAAAAAHkU/hgMajchRSBMHRVQDvKGg7ynVCc1HNIskwCK4BGAsYHg/IMG-8840.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QvI3BzWIQ3E/XsSytxU47RI/AAAAAAAAHkU/hgMajchRSBMHRVQDvKGg7ynVCc1HNIskwCK4BGAsYHg/s320/IMG-8840.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>6. Once the filler or glue for the rocks and gravel is dry, cover the whole model with a coat of your 1st color of paint. <br />
After watching and researching a few different techniques for creating some good gaming terrain for my modern Afghanistan project I found some information on using mdf bases with caulking and rocks and paints which really inspired me to try to take my modelling to a new level.<br />
<br />
Currently I have a desert mat from Cigar Box Battlemats which I love but over time I've really struggled with how to model uneven terrain and especially to incorporate rivers and roads into the scene.<br />
<br />
Previously I modeled cork tiles to sat them close together to create a gaming scene but I resent the 1 use wonder some of these pieces creates and struggle with how to find a common ground of using such terrain pieces but also having some flexibility from game to game. My solution to this is to model pieces which sit on top of the mat but also if large enough have open cut spaces to accommodate smaller pieces which vary from game to game. So a terrain section might have a road built into it with 2 rectangles cut out where a field may be placed in 1 game and a building placed in the next.<br />
<br />
Below are some pics from previous games using such cork terrain squares:<br />

<br />
I've decided to start again still using my mat as the based but using mdf and card to scenic items and matching a new set of house paints to the mat.<br />
<br />

<br />
A lot has happened since I was last here. Around my last posts in 2017 I had made the decision to drop 6mm projects in favor of 15mm. This in part was due to eyesight adjusting and making it harder to paint but also a renewed interest in unit distinctions and painting skills.<br />
<br />
I am still however a gamer over a painter but I do spend a little more time and effort researching uniform and equipment colors as well as a desire to improve my overall painting and modelling skills. My perfectionist character traits will continue to tell me I will never get painting or modelling skills to the level I envisage but that too is a journey I am on - to allow myself to not be perfect and find that line between good and not good enough.<br />
<br />
Here is the current list of projects I am engaged on and the status of each as the new beginning point for the resurgence of this blog:<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">1a. NAPOLEONICS</span></b><br />
<br />
This has and will always be my Tier 1 project. After selling my 20,000 odd Adler Napoleonics in 2017 I have quickly acquired around 7-8,000 15mm figures.<br />
<br />
These are made up of:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>brand new ABs direct from AB and Eureka Miniatures in Australia</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>2nd hand ABs collected from other wargamers off eBay and Facebook groups</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>dodgy prepaints off Ebay from China (initial collections to get started)</li>
</ul>
<div>
I began building armies based on the 1815 campaign. Currently I have completed the 1st and 2nd Divisions from the French 1st Corps in 1815 under D'Erlon, the British 1st (Guards) Division, the British 3rd Division and some of the 2nd Netherlands Division.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GoP891TCtBQ/XsHalrgdb1I/AAAAAAAAHfM/kFuPImtnwP8FZXR0fsRHwVDhWTxC15pwgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_8618.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GoP891TCtBQ/XsHalrgdb1I/AAAAAAAAHfM/kFuPImtnwP8FZXR0fsRHwVDhWTxC15pwgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG_8618.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IbIWmelDxds/XsHasXz2NLI/AAAAAAAAHfQ/UNwuHsskKT08uhvrOnURs0ElD175BqyJgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_8680.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IbIWmelDxds/XsHasXz2NLI/AAAAAAAAHfQ/UNwuHsskKT08uhvrOnURs0ElD175BqyJgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG_8680.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
GOALS:</div>
<div>
I have large goals for this project. I intend to build the majority of forces from the 1815 Waterloo campaign and 1812 Russian Campaign playing both solo using board games such as War and Peace and tabletop rules of Empire V. To do this I still need to work on solo rules for both the campaign and tabletop portions of the project.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
RULES:</div>
<br />
<div>
For rules I am still using Empire V as I still find these to give me the best results from a Napoleonic battle I have come to expect through 30 years of readings and research.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<br />
<div>
NEXT STEPS:</div>
<div>
Final touches to British 1st (Guards) Division</div>
<div>
1st Brigade from the 2nd Netherlands Division</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">1b. MODERNS</span></b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My second Tier 1 project is ultra moderns gaming Afghanistan, Iraq and ultra modern Special Operations in 20mm. Over the past few years I have collected a good amount of infantry and vehicles primarily focused on Afghanistan around 2006-2012. I managed to complete a platoon of 2006 ADF and bought a 2nd hand group of British to go with a group of SEALs I had painted for me. I now also have a large collection of Taliban and various uncompleted attempts at a tabletop modelling Helmand province in Afghanistan.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iU_sTX7t6qo/XsHb6neLrXI/AAAAAAAAHfo/OobI9H5R8c8KHUDH6RFteCemO626IG6vwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/62217024_321966295365313_4344606054106005504_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iU_sTX7t6qo/XsHb6neLrXI/AAAAAAAAHfo/OobI9H5R8c8KHUDH6RFteCemO626IG6vwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/62217024_321966295365313_4344606054106005504_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Most of the figures are:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Elheim</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Wartime</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Britannia</li>
</ul>
<div>
GOALS:</div>
<div>
To campaign modern Afghanistan, Iraq and eventually modern special operations.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
RULES:</div>
<div>
The rules I use for this project is Spectre Operations v2.0. I was using Force On Force and still really like the rules but found the Spectre rules more individual which is what I like for this level of skirmish gaming. In time I may add a few house rules to cater for some extra flavor I like from some of the other rule sets I have picked up over the years - Chain Of Command Moderns, Force On Force, Black Ops, Skirmish Sangine and Point Of Contact.</div>
<div>
For the campaign system I have various board based games such as A Distant Plain, BCT Command Kandahar and Enduring Freedom. I need to spend some time getting familiar with all of these but I have also begun work on my own system based on being in command of military forces in an area (AO) and juggling a roster of units and orders being passed down. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-h8dTuadhyG0/XsHciZWY-II/AAAAAAAAHf0/msPW9JRNRS0oqdeEmZw-jKF1ICGOYbzKACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Spectre_Operations_Cover-1_1024x.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="707" data-original-width="499" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-h8dTuadhyG0/XsHciZWY-II/AAAAAAAAHf0/msPW9JRNRS0oqdeEmZw-jKF1ICGOYbzKACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Spectre_Operations_Cover-1_1024x.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
NEXT STEPS:</div>
</div>
<div>
Continue developing terrain making skills through various scenic pieces</div>
<div>
Continue rules learning games using Spectre</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>2a. IMPERIAL ROME</b></span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The first of four Tier 2 projects for me is based on Imperial Rome using the 15mm figures and the rules Hail Caesar. These past couple of years sees 1 cohort of legionaries built up and a few rule sets reviewed with a single set chosen. My focus for this period is in Gaul and so a few dozen Gauls have been purchased and painted up.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
GOALS:</div>
<div>
Campaign to generate tabletops battles loosely based on Rome vs Gaul.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
RULES:</div>
<div>
Black Powder Hail Caesar</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
NEXT STEPS:</div>
<div>
Finish 2 units of Gauls - awaiting their basing and shields</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>2b. THIRD CRUSADE</b></span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This project is based on the period around the 2nd and 3rd Crusade and the fall of Jerusalem and to date all I have done is to build a unit of foot and a unit of mounted knights. The historical reference for this project is very liberal for me seeing as its a Tier 2 project. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
GOAL:</div>
<div>
To campaign loosely based on this period using a board game for campaign movements and Hail Caesar for tabletop engagements of 15mm figures.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
RULES:</div>
<div>
Black Powder Hail Caesar</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
NEXT STEPS:</div>
<div>
Build more units of crusader foot and horse</div>
<div>
Explore board games of the period to choose a system to use going forward</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">2c. SCI FI</span></b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This Tier 2 project is very early in its life having just purchased a 3d printer and producing a bunch of test starships. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
GOALS:</div>
<div>
To campaign large fleet actions but also incorporate 6mm planetside combat and maybe even 15mm-28mm special forces skirmish type actions as well.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
RULES:</div>
<div>
For the campaign rules I am yet to find a good system but for the fleet based battles I have been experimenting with Full Thrust and its addons and for the planetside battles a combination of Star Grunt II and Tomorrow's War.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
NEXT STEPS:</div>
<div>
Build prototype fleets</div>
<div>
Get more familiar with Full Thrust rules</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>2d. ENGLISH CIVIL WAR</b></span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Another Tier 2 project still in its infancy with only 1 unit of Royalists completed and a set of rules selected to use.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
GOALS:</div>
<div>
Campaign the 2nd half of the war in 15mm</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
RULES:</div>

Besides a few comments and followers who I help to inspire (and thus giving the feeling of giving back for all the inspiration I get from others) I also love rereading older posts and logging the progress of various projects I work on.<br />
<br />
So from this week I will be back updating this blog on a regular basis along with Monthly progress reports to help keep myself on track.<br />
<br />
See you soon!War Depothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00910964006226298275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4561252020159933533.post-49526016244905290992017-03-22T18:42:00.000+10:002017-03-22T18:42:02.637+10:00Roads ReflockedI bought a tonne of roads and rivers from an eBay seller called Fat Frank. They are great but I didn't realise they would come already painted and flocked with static grass.<br />
<br />
This week during my Tier 3 time I was able to begin deflocking the edges, repainting them in my standard table colour and then added my flock to match my Cigar Box mat. I also paint and flock further in from the edge to reduce the width of the actual path.<br />
<br />
On the right is the standard road section and on the left if my reflocked version.<br />

I think Empire V will be took much for this period and the quick game goals I have so I purchased Black Powder for this project. The Paint and Chat groups I have been linking to lately suggested I get the AWI update for BP called Rebellion and I am glad I did. It contains so much information about armies and uniforms and the battles. Its a great resource.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yHVlW6XmTkU/WL4VCsT8HoI/AAAAAAAAGzg/wO2tlhAYsscuY9QW6RysurfNpkDWSBVsQCPcB/s1600/IMG_4623.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yHVlW6XmTkU/WL4VCsT8HoI/AAAAAAAAGzg/wO2tlhAYsscuY9QW6RysurfNpkDWSBVsQCPcB/s400/IMG_4623.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
I know Peter Pig and Blue Moon make the best 15mm AWI figures but at this stage I am moving to my other Tier 3 project of 15mm Crusades next as the figures are a good break from painting Napoleonics. Orders for AWI will be placed in a couple of months.War Depothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00910964006226298275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4561252020159933533.post-91187112787413493042017-02-20T15:12:00.000+10:002017-02-20T15:12:09.826+10:00Video Updates Coming Soon!The other thing I got into this week was movie making.<br />
<br />
A couple of the guys on the paint and chat lines suggested using my Iphone to film updates to my blog. At first I passed it off but then the idea took hold. I decided I could take small snippets of footage and edit them together into a small 5 or 10 minute update once a month to the blog.<br />
<br />
This weekend I took some test snippets and downloaded Windows Movie Maker and edited it into a small sample clip. I must admit it was a lot easier than I had expected and so am now excited about using this media to journal more of my gaming journey and keep myself accountable to you readers.<br />
<br />
Feel free to comment or make suggestions and I will see what I can do to respond and include any material requested.<br />
<br />
Stay tuned.War Depothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00910964006226298275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4561252020159933533.post-46189593082374932282017-02-19T15:07:00.000+10:002017-02-19T15:07:54.208+10:00ADF in Afghanistan section complete in 20mmFinally!<br />
<br />
A few years ago I bought some ADF troops in 20mm from <a href="http://www.wartimeminiatures.com.au/" target="_blank">Wartime</a>.<br />
<br />
I got to work on them researching the paints I needed to depict troops in Afghanistan and painted a few dozen.<br />
<br />
Then they sat. And sat. For a long time.<br />
<br />

<br />
This month 2 things happened.<br />
<br />
1. One of my new years resolutions for 2017 was to split my month into the 3 main projects I have with:<br />
<br />
* 1st week of each month for my 3rd tier project of Terrain, 15mm Crusades and 15mm AWI<br />
* 2nd week of each month for my 2nd tier project of 20mm Moderns<br />
* the remainder of each month for my 1st tier project being 15mm Napoleonics<br />
<br />
2. Joining 2 online paint and chat sessions. These have been fantastic with not only the chance to chat to some great people about gaming and painting but also as a focused to paint.<br />
<br />
* Tabletop Commander Forums chat which is every day at 4pm EST which is 0600hrs here in Brisbane. It runs for 3 or so hours and I have been able to get on for 30 to 60 minutes. It runs through Google Hangouts but every day the episode is posted on YouTube at <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqwCzP9ydVVMF6lmsflwsAw" target="_blank">Tabletop Commanders Youtube channel</a>.<br />
<br />
* Rocky's War Room chat is every Mon, Wed and Fri at around 9:30pm EST which is around 12:30pm here in Brisbane. It runs for a few hours and also runs via Google Hangouts and every episode is posted on YouTube at <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCM6RC7UtkGbDog5E8cgzq0g" target="_blank">Rocky's War Room Youtube channel.</a><br />
<br />
As a result of these 2 things, I dug out my partly painted ADF troops and arranged a standard infantry section of 8 figures and finished off all the painting. All that remains is basing to be done.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
This week I need to put them away again until next month and now move back on to my 15mm Napoleonics.War Depothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00910964006226298275noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4561252020159933533.post-83626811026462551902017-02-05T18:51:00.001+10:002017-02-05T18:51:42.992+10:00Practice Macro Zoom Shots on an Iphone 6Here's a couple of shots I took of close up on Peter's 28mm figures:<br />

<br />
Although its 28mm and I paint 15mm I am hoping it will help me with the quality of my painting and the colours and techniques. Its a fine line between speed and quality but I am confident I can find a good position on that line for my Napoleonics.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9cgc5dqeUZQ/WIqxS8L1hyI/AAAAAAAAGqs/4h1tARBAMn8ss7OQTt1kY1PKGJIGpDq8ACLcB/s1600/IMG_4460.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9cgc5dqeUZQ/WIqxS8L1hyI/AAAAAAAAGqs/4h1tARBAMn8ss7OQTt1kY1PKGJIGpDq8ACLcB/s400/IMG_4460.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The base is mounting card with paint and flock to match my tabletop mat from Cigar Box but the edges have items such as clump foilage and rocks added.<br />
<br />
The middle is then 2 separately modeled woods with the same materials.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The idea is that together there is a dense and seemless woods but the centres can be removed should troops need to pass through them.War Depothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00910964006226298275noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4561252020159933533.post-46700067763489695682017-01-28T12:26:00.000+10:002017-01-28T12:26:10.110+10:00Thurs Night Gaming: 1813 Campaign2017 sees in a new opportunity for a campaign at the weekly Thursday night group I game with.<br />
<br />
We needed a good Campaign system that modeled not only movement but the affects of that movement and supply but it had to be quick and easy as it was purely for generating battles for the tabletop.<br />
<br />
I found a new series of games from <a href="http://italianwars.net/" target="_blank">Europa Simulazioni</a> which seemed to fit the bill.<br />
<br />
They had just released their 1813 game so I purchased it and found someone online wanting to offload the 1812 game for Russia as it was out of print.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A quick read of the rules and a check of the maps and it looked like it would work for us. Tokens are basically a division in strength with separate tokens for artillery parks. The movement rules are based on lines of supply and supply train tokens available to each player each turn. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We dropped the unit tokens in favor of our own army flags but kept the 6 points of stacking rule and everything else except the actual combat calculation. There is a calculation to find if an attacking stack actually succeeds in attacking a defending stack. But then a combat calculation occurs which we removed in favor of using the tabletop to make the decision. So far its working well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last night we did 2 moves according to the rules as a play test. All players were happy with it but we did make a couple of small tweaks to match our orders of battle and requirements.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next week we begin a one of battle as a siege opportunity was risen and all present would like to see how it plays out on the tabletop. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then we will reset the map and begin. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The group has 2 players keen on the strategic campaign with up to another 4 just happy to fight battles on the night.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Oh and before I forget, I contacted the producers of these games and confirmed they are working on an 1814/1815 game. Personally I cannot wait for that one. And I hope they do an 1809 as well and I will be all set :)<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MJ_8b2tCcAI/WIqsUeaVxlI/AAAAAAAAGp8/4tfzDmPU2B8pbU00tbqeEi-tz350LpZmwCLcB/s1600/IMG_4465.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MJ_8b2tCcAI/WIqsUeaVxlI/AAAAAAAAGp8/4tfzDmPU2B8pbU00tbqeEi-tz350LpZmwCLcB/s400/IMG_4465.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
They look good except were based differently to Empire V and were missing all their command figures. So an order to AB was placed and today it arrived.<br />
<br />

I still have only a limited number of projects I wish to focus my hobby time on. These will be mentioned and updated upon later here later. With a new home that has a large rumpus room and the chance to reorganize that space a little better I was feeling quite accomplished.<br />
<br />
The biggest goal this year was the decision to move my main project of Empire Napoleonics from 6mm to 15mm. Being a part of an active 28mm gaming group each week slowly influenced my appreciation of more realistic uniforms and better painting. That coincided with aging eyesight. Over the past couple of years my 6mm Napoleonics project has been plagued with repeated attempts to decide upon a figure ratio. Empire uses a 1:60 ratio which a 720 man battalion represented by 12 figures on the table. 6mm is commonly selected for price and/or mass benefits and so I continuously struggled with whether or not to double the width or double the depth or even both. Some experiments can be seen in posts on this sight with 48 figures in a battalion!<br />
<br />
With the move to 15mm it meant I no longer had to decide on ratios because both space and budget had to be enforced resulting in the standard 1:60 ratios. At least for now! lol<br />
<br />
So now let me update you the reader on where my projects stand at the end of 2016 and heading into 2017:<br />
<br />
<b>1. Napoleonics</b><br />
<br />
As you may guess the move to 15mm for this project meant I now had 20,000 6mm Adler to sell and no 15mm figures. I was starting again!<br />
<br />
A friend of mine gave me some left over ABs and Old Glory figures which I painted up. I was happy with the research into the uniforms and the finished paint job and so went on a purchasing spree.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rPeTKzD7WQg/VzpayZvZleI/AAAAAAAAGbU/7OTd1fVCRAkgcM2yBcJyEEINNC1zxjXQwCPcB/s1600/IMG_3285.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rPeTKzD7WQg/VzpayZvZleI/AAAAAAAAGbU/7OTd1fVCRAkgcM2yBcJyEEINNC1zxjXQwCPcB/s400/IMG_3285.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
To get some large formations tabletop ready in the least amount of time, and after researching painters to help me in my project, I settled on repeated buys off eBay and soon had around 1000 French, British and Prussian troops to begin with. And all for an average of $1.52 per figure. I also purchased some AB, Eureka and CGM figures with my preference being the ABs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pqJfqWluSa4/V2eTbNhfsoI/AAAAAAAAGgE/kQCm5chsZpIrQ-IpCs7ttYLWOX4mvGMPwCPcB/s1600/IMG_3463.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pqJfqWluSa4/V2eTbNhfsoI/AAAAAAAAGgE/kQCm5chsZpIrQ-IpCs7ttYLWOX4mvGMPwCPcB/s400/IMG_3463.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I also began work on my painting process and soon worked out my style and speed to give me what I wanted. Not being a painter myself I was happy with the outcome and consider it above average especially once I began comparing them to 2nd figures off eBay I was collecting along the way.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fMINoSgIHyg/V4X9Gpo5F_I/AAAAAAAAGhw/6LeUI3m4HH4OATQQFi9ElTiNEtOPzwWGgCPcB/s1600/IMG_3533.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fMINoSgIHyg/V4X9Gpo5F_I/AAAAAAAAGhw/6LeUI3m4HH4OATQQFi9ElTiNEtOPzwWGgCPcB/s400/IMG_3533.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
So at the end of 2016 I have around a half of the French 1st Corps for 1815, enough loose French supplemented by a small order to AB to complete the Corps. I also have enough British figures (now to be Hanoverian due to Stovepipe shakos), a collection of AB and CGM British to build the British 3rd Division from 1815. Another smaller pile of painted and unpainted Prussians will be used to build a Brigade or 2 from 1815.<br />
<br />
More purchases will expand these formations throughout 2017 with most of them being painted by myself unless I can finally settle on a painter to assist for less than $3 per figure. Of course a regular eye on eBay for unwanted AB or CGM will help as well.<br />
<br />
Period-wise I am still focused on 1815 but am keen to add Russians for 1812 and Austrians for 1809 but that should not happen in 2017.<br />
<br />
<b>2. Moderns</b><br />
<br />
With my move to 15mm for Napoleonics I was considering the same for my Modern projects. I am still keen to explore Iraq and Afghanistan and Ultra Modern as well. A quick look at the ranges on offer for 15mm and the fact that most of the 20mm vehicles can be purchased as quick already assembled and painted plastic or diecast "toys" knocked the 15mm idea on the head. And of course the already large collection of 20mm I had assembled but never used to date!<br />
<br />
2016 saw a purchase of a large collection being offloaded by a friend in Sydney which just about doubled my stash of painted and unpainted figures. I am in a good position to build most if not all of the forces I need to see this project take some traction in 2017.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TDOO0EZy2wI/V42s1dfPKXI/AAAAAAAAGi4/cy8avr2-Zu0-FpzW9ddERrok1d4FYv2VACPcB/s1600/IMG_3545.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TDOO0EZy2wI/V42s1dfPKXI/AAAAAAAAGi4/cy8avr2-Zu0-FpzW9ddERrok1d4FYv2VACPcB/s400/IMG_3545.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I am still set on using Force on Force with a couple of additions but I will also test out the Skirmish Sangin rules I have.<br />
<br />
<b>3. Terrain</b><br />
<br />
Terrain was good in 2016. Recent purchases of multiple Cigar Box Battle Mats and the reshuffle of those to settle on 2 x Grasslands mats meant I could finally move on to other aspects of my tabletop. For years I tried all sorts of ideas and this blog is riddled with posts on that subject.<br />
<br />
During 2016 I also settled on hills. The mats work well with items underneath them to represent contours and hills but I could never decide on a material or system to use. I tried cork tiles, foam sections, books, rubber mats and even packaging foam. In the end a $1 packet of paper plates with a drawer protector over the top solved all my needs. Not only did I get random looking and non uniformed peaks and tops but the drawer protector adds some stability to the hollows and provides grip for the plates. It works really well.<br />
<br />
With the table cover and the hills out of the way I moved on to the roads and rivers and a large collection of already produced and painted pieces from Fat Franks off eBay came to good use. A quick reflock to match the battle mat and they are good to go.<br />
<br />
On to buildings. I've always been interested in modelling my own buildings as some of the purchased ones I had collected over the years and/or seen online seem to have a footprint too out of scale for a game running at 1:60 ratios. A random look on eBay and a purchase and a collection of custom made good quality buildings joined my project. They do need a little work to turn them into full scenic items with gardens and paths and trees and hedges etc. But they are a good base to work with.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SbuO4kzL6k4/V-mpB2ZELWI/AAAAAAAAGlQ/xf18DbgMpp8dIPezeHq9cmy7_id-NvLtgCPcB/s1600/IMG_3990.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SbuO4kzL6k4/V-mpB2ZELWI/AAAAAAAAGlQ/xf18DbgMpp8dIPezeHq9cmy7_id-NvLtgCPcB/s400/IMG_3990.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Woods were a lot of trouble. So many ideas and so many ways to do it. I wanted sections of wooded areas that can be placed on the table in groups or as a single section but not just a terrain base with flock and some model trees. A Youtube search showed an idea with a scenic base built to accomodate a number of smaller modelled bases. I built a couple of prototypes of these and they looked good so I began work on some larger sections.<br />
<br />
2017 will see more work done on woods and then on to scenic items such as fields and hedges and fences etc. Hoepfully there will be some full tables for gaming to show off as well.<br />
<br />
<b>4. Other Projects</b><br />
<br />
After those 3 everything else is 2nd position. As mentioned a number or times only a few can be achieved in my lifetime and so the selection is limited to 2 or 3. Previously I had begun collections of 6mm ACW, 10mm Crusades and 10mm Romans but all these are now either sold off or soon to be sold off in favour of 15mm collections. At this point I am thinking 15mm Romans or Crusades and maybe 15mm AWI. Stay tuned but I doubt serious progress will be made this year other than maybe a few samples purchased and painted as a break from the other work.<br />
<br />
<br />
So there we have it. A look at the state of things at the end of 2016 and beginning of 2017.<br />
<br />
One of my personal goals this year is yet again to keep this blog updated and so I aim to update things at the beginning of each month. I have also settled on my spare time with Sun, Mon and Tues being booked for Forex Trading and the rest of the week dedicated to Wargaming. Its now mid January and this scheme is working out well so far.War Depothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00910964006226298275noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4561252020159933533.post-58244081757269953652016-09-27T11:24:00.001+10:002017-03-20T18:47:08.261+10:001st French Foot Artillery Battery CompleteTo go with my 1st division of French Infantry for 1815 I have purchased some guns and crew from eBay and once again added some final touches and rebased them for Empire V.<br />

Before</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The blue was updated with a darker french blue. I use Vellajo Dark Prussian for all by French blues. I also touched up the white belts and straps and added an Olive Green for wooden parts, Gunmetal Grey for metal parts and a Black Oil Wash (same I use for my own undercoating) to tarnish down the brass barrels.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I then added basing and used a different flock this time that matches the table top mat more closely.</div>

<br />
They arrived today and I didn't fully realise they were all hand made. They do look good though and I must commend their creator. Some good modelling skills there.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SbuO4kzL6k4/V-mpB2ZELWI/AAAAAAAAGlM/x3VUVfrkWCEvugk8-ZQ2HSPwbIRmdEgPwCLcB/s1600/IMG_3990.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SbuO4kzL6k4/V-mpB2ZELWI/AAAAAAAAGlM/x3VUVfrkWCEvugk8-ZQ2HSPwbIRmdEgPwCLcB/s400/IMG_3990.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The next step is to work with these to model small areas of farms, chateaus and built up areas that can work together to build villages and towns. They also need to be able to contain troops for modelling defensive positions and some modelling improvements such as fences and hedges and trees to get the right look.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Stay tuned!</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BnlnK2LAs9c/V4YAjnFpf5I/AAAAAAAAGh4/36sac-xBPVATwqSJ0X-GMOtuMiOwOJOAgCLcB/s1600/FR%2BFLAG%2B1815%2B54th%2BInfantry.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="186" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BnlnK2LAs9c/V4YAjnFpf5I/AAAAAAAAGh4/36sac-xBPVATwqSJ0X-GMOtuMiOwOJOAgCLcB/s400/FR%2BFLAG%2B1815%2B54th%2BInfantry.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
To begin with I decided upon 13mm high as the flag image per unit is wider than it is high. I then saved the document as a pdf file and printed it on a black and white printer to make sure the size is right.<br />
<br />
I cut out the 1st unit flag and added it to the figure but it was way too big to fit.<br />
<br />
The images were all resized to 11mm high instead and the file resaved and then reprinted.<br />
<br />
This new flag was then applied to the figure with much better results.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FzoxwzgYlsw/V4YBDOBFGkI/AAAAAAAAGh8/V48U2gIOjnsh9FR970_BeOHOXtO8X6iRACLcB/s1600/IMG_3534.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FzoxwzgYlsw/V4YBDOBFGkI/AAAAAAAAGh8/V48U2gIOjnsh9FR970_BeOHOXtO8X6iRACLcB/s400/IMG_3534.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The next step was to print the file again in colour and apply them to the figures.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MTDqJnPHA1U/V5kuZk7azYI/AAAAAAAAGjQ/lp1GECq6QP4wRO6ij1FyZ5viRtmse5zRwCPcB/s1600/IMG_3560.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MTDqJnPHA1U/V5kuZk7azYI/AAAAAAAAGjQ/lp1GECq6QP4wRO6ij1FyZ5viRtmse5zRwCPcB/s400/IMG_3560.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now I need to finish painting the Brigade Commander and that 1st Brigade of the 1st Division of the 1st Corps of French at Waterloo will be complete. Then on to the 2nd Brigade!</div>

In my efforts to pump out 1 unit per week through either my own painting, eBay purchases or using professional painters, I have been going beserk purchasing French Line, Prussian Line, Prussian Landwehr, British Line and relative artillery from eBay. One particular seller has regular lots listed and for good starting prices. I have a budget set per figure and work to winning those lots under that price.<br />
<br />
When you purchase 1 or 2 lots every couple of days you don't realize how many you have leaving your bank account and arriving in your mailbox. So I put them all into a spreadsheet and it turns out I have purchased over 800 infantry, over 100 cavalry and over a dozen guns. Almost half of these have been in the past 2-3 weeks.<br />
<br />
So I need to let it be a little and concentrate on basing and upgrading these ones I have. I don't want to repeat the mistakes of my old 6mm collecting where I ended up with over 20,000 figures with a good portion of them not even knowing I had them!<br />
<br />
Stay tuned for more eBay units being based and upgraded.<br />

I picked out a few items I wanted but then the owner added a whole bunch of freebies and also offered some additional stuff I could not say no to.<br />
